What are Sealants?
Sealants are thin, transparent protective coatings that can be applied to the back teeth, specifically designed to prevent cavities and deep staining that might occur without their protection. One of the great advantages of sealants is their versatility; they are suitable for both pediatric and adult patients, making them an excellent preventive option for individuals of all ages.
These protective coverings act as a barrier, sealing off the grooves and pits in the back teeth where food particles and plaque can accumulate, thereby significantly reducing the risk of decay. Typically, sealants can last for up to three years before they gradually wear away, providing lasting protection during that time. Regular dental check-ups can help assess the condition of the sealants and determine when reapplication might be necessary, ensuring your teeth remain safeguarded against cavities and staining.

The sealant procedure is quick and straightforward, typically completed in just a few minutes at our office. We begin by cleaning and drying the back teeth. Then, a clear liquid varnish is applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This sealant is dried and cured using a bright light. The process is repeated for any other back teeth that require protection.
It’s important to continue brushing and flossing your teeth as usual, as sealants do not protect the front teeth or the spaces between the back teeth once they are in place.
If you think you might need a dental guard for sports, please call our office, and we can arrange an appointment to have one made for you.
